Is my helicopter training going the way it's supposed to be?

Pilot's that are new to helicopter flight training are always(most of the time) curious about their progress. It sure is a difficult "thing" to measure. Here's are some facts about helicopter training that has been completed at Universal Air Academy. But keep in mind that "everybody is different."

  • Many people like to fly helicopters or just want to try it out. If the price matches with the budget, they do it. We try to keep the cost as low as possible to have as many people as possible fly helicopters. The majority of the people that want to try flying a helicopter, will visit us for a demo flight. And get hooked! But because of the cost, unfortunately it becomes a one time experience. But for those that get addicted to the sensation will definitely schedule to fly again and again and again. A typical helicopter that you see that is flying in the sky will cost thousands of dollars to operate and fly or rent. However, a typical training helicopter will be a fraction of the cost and be in the hundreds. For example, a 30 minute flight in the Robinson R22 helicopter will be around $140 with us. If the price matches everybody can try it. The bottom line is that if you get a flight or two and you don't continue, there's nothing wrong with that. Just visit us once a year. It will be a "while" to get a helicopter pilot license, but you can still fly with a flight instructor and still lear how to fly a helicopter.
  • Determined to get a pilot license? There are three reasons why anybody will spend time and money to get a helicopter pilot license. 1.) Just because.  2.) Required for higher position in a Career.  3.) Want to make flying as a helicopter pilot a Career.    If you fall in to the three reasons listed above, here is what you need to know:
    • if you are getting paid to get a pilot license, you are "LUCKY." Take advantage of it and have no worries. Just get your pilot license.
    • if you are funding yourself. Plan-It-Right  The total cost is usually anywhere from 9,900 and up. This is for the helicopter private pilot. It's your effort and the instructor's guidance that make the difference when it comes to the total cost. Sounds like a lot, but when it comes to helicopter flying, "it's worth the cost." The total cost for the rest of the training you need varies wuite a bit depending on the type of aircraft you chose to receive your helicopter pilot training in.You'll have to contact us to get the average cost.
    • If you already started, here are your check points: 20 to 30 hours, you can be soloing. 50 to 70 hours, you could have your helicopter pilot certificate. Additional 50 to 60 hours, you could have your helicopter instrument rating, when you have a total of 150 hours to 160 hours of flight time, you could be getting your helicopter commercial pilot license. To instruct, you need a total of 200 flight hours(if you are instructing in a robinson helicopter). So, at the end of it, if you get all the pilot certificate with in 200 hours of flight time, your doing excellent. You are on track. If you are getting your pilot certificate, below the total flight time listed above, you are doing really good. Keep up the good job!
